NEAT (Nanomaterials in the Environment, Agriculture, and Technology) constitutes an interdisciplinary group of people working on a variety of fundamental problems related to the materials science, chemistry and physics of nano and new materials. Central to NEAT is the Peter A. Rock Thermochemistry Laboratory of Prof. Alexandra Navrotsky and Prof. Ricardo Castro which offers unique calorimetric capabilities for the study of energetics of bulk and nanomaterials and their surfaces.
Thermodynamic work underway encompasses actinide and lanthanide science, confinement of molecules in zeolites and metal organic frameworks, battery materials, environmental and geological nanomaterials and ceramics. Prof. William Casey studies the interaction of nanoparticles and clusters in solution. Prof. Sabyasachi Sen studies nanoscale structure in amorphous materials and Prof. Gang-Yu Liu works on bionanomaterials.
NEAT links many other faculty working in the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Land, Air and Water Resources. UC Davis has vibrant and interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programs and is expanding in many of these areas.
